The Fleet

Three fleets, one Viking way

Viking builds its ships in identical series — every ocean ship a sister, every river Longship the same elegant design — so wherever you sail, the experience is unmistakably Viking. Understated Scandinavian interiors, no inside staterooms, and a ship that always feels familiar.

River

The Viking Longships

The world’s most extensive river fleet. The iconic Longships sail the Rhine, Main and Danube, with purpose-built sister vessels designed for the waterways they call home — the Douro, the Seine, the Nile, the Mekong and the Mississippi. Around 190 guests, with scenery from every stateroom.

Ocean

The ocean sisters

A fleet of identical small ships carrying just 930 guests each — every stateroom with a veranda, every ship the same award-winning Scandinavian design. Small enough to sail into ports the megaships pass by, and familiar from the moment you step aboard your second Viking voyage.

Expedition

Octantis & Polaris

Two identical state-of-the-art Polar Class ships, purpose-built for Antarctica, the Arctic and the Great Lakes. Just 378 guests, with more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels — as close as possible to the most magnificent scenery on earth, in complete comfort.

Viking River Cruising

A fleet built for every river

Viking doesn’t redeploy one ship design around the world — it builds a dedicated fleet for each river it sails, shaped by that river’s locks, bridges and waters, all sharing the same clean Scandinavian design and unmistakable Viking character.

Europe

The Viking Longships

The iconic 190-guest Longships sail the Rhine, Main and Danube — the heart of European river cruising — with adapted sister designs purpose-built for the particular locks and waters of the Douro, the Elbe and the Seine.

Viking Mississippi on the Mississippi River

North America

The Mississippi

Viking Mississippi — 386 guests in all-outside staterooms — was purpose-built as the first truly modern cruise ship on America’s great river, sailing between New Orleans and St. Paul through the heart of the country.

The pyramids of Giza, Egypt

Egypt

The Nile

Egypt’s largest and most modern Nile fleet, owned and operated by Viking itself — intimate ships of just 52 to 82 guests, sailing between Luxor and Aswan with resident Egyptologists guiding every voyage among the temples and tombs.

The temples of Angkor, Cambodia

Asia

The Mekong & India

The 80-guest Viking Saigon brings Scandinavian elegance to the Mekong between Vietnam and Cambodia, while dedicated vessels sail India’s Ganges and Brahmaputra — some of the most exotic river cruising on earth.

Viking Expeditions

Expeditions with genuine scientific credentials

Octantis and Polaris aren’t just expedition ships — they are working research vessels. Resident scientists sail on every voyage, real research happens on board, and guests are invited to take part. It’s an approach to Antarctica, the Arctic and the Great Lakes that no other line replicates.

01

Science on board

Each ship carries a working science laboratory, with resident scientists on every voyage conducting research in fields from glaciology to ornithology — in partnership with the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Guests can tour the lab, join workshops and contribute to live research.

02

A weather station at sea

Through a partnership with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), both ships are sanctioned weather-balloon launch stations — guests gather on the top deck to watch the launches. Below the waterline, onboard instruments continuously sample water quality, feeding data to working scientists.

03

The Hangar

An in-ship marina lets guests board excursion craft from a sheltered, stable platform rather than a gangway in the swell. The equipment is remarkable: Zodiacs, two-seater kayaks, two 12-seat Special Operations Boats and two six-guest submarines per ship — all complimentary, whichever stateroom you book.

Three things set the Viking experience apart.

01

Three ways to explore

River, ocean and expedition voyages, all under one cruise line. Guests who love Viking’s approach and ship design can explore more of the world without ever switching lines.

02

Defined by what it isn’t

Where others list inclusions, Viking is upfront about what it leaves out — making it easy to know if the experience is right for you.

03

Identical sister ships

Every ocean ship is identical, as is every river ship. Past guests always know what to expect — and if a river ship can’t pass on high or low waters, guests transfer to an identical vessel with minimal disruption.

Voted #1 for River and Ocean cruising in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards — five years running.
