How to Find Discounted Air New Zealand Business Class to Europe and The USA
12 Jul 2017by Fine Travel
For many New Zealand travellers, Air New Zealand’s Business Premier is a leading choice for the long-haul travel to the UK, Europe or the USA — but it often comes at a premium price. The good news is that there are two ways to bring that price down: taking advantage of Air New Zealand's strategic airline partnerships and knowing when to book.
The draw of flying our national carrier and the benefits of status recognition through the Airpoints programme attract many travellers to Air New Zealand's Business Class and Premium Economy offering.
On the direct routes to the United States and Canada, Air New Zealand operates its own aircraft, but since it stopped flying to London it has expanded the range of strategic arrangements with partner airlines. It is these arrangements — and the way Air New Zealand releases its specials — that open the door to flying in the Business Premier cabin for less.
When to book: how Air New Zealand releases its specials
Not every airline discounts the same way, and Air New Zealand has a distinctive pattern. We classify it as a tactical specials airline: it releases discounted Business Class airfares for a defined sale period and a specific travel window, and when that period ends the special generally expires and is replaced by a longer-life published fare. For the UK & Europe, its joint venture with Singapore Airlines means we tend to see these tactical specials come around relatively regularly.
Book when a special is in the market. With a tactical-specials airline, the discount is there when the sale is on — not waiting to appear closer to departure.
Book early once your dates are set. Each subsequent sale is unlikely to undercut the one before it, so the earlier you secure a live special — once your dates fall within the airline’s system range — the better placed you usually are.
The last-minute bargain is largely a thing of the past. For Business Class to the UK, Europe and North America, the greatest discounts now go to those who plan ahead, not those who wait.
We unpack the different approaches the airlines take — tactical specials, rolling specials and sharp lead-in fares — in our companion article, When is the Best Time to Book a UK / Europe Business Class Airfare?
Air New Zealand Business Premier to North America
In the past, we've shared with subscribers to Fine Travel’s Business Class Sales Alerts particularly clever savings on the direct services between New Zealand and North America: a partner airline’s fare priced below the Air New Zealand fare released at the same time — for travel in the very same Air New Zealand Business Premier cabin. It has become less common now that a number of American airlines have started flying their own aircraft to New Zealand.
How did that work? Air New Zealand codeshares with partner airlines on these routes, so a partner’s ticket included travel on an Air New Zealand-operated service. In short, you buy the partner’s fare but fly in Air New Zealand’s Business Premier. The saving varies from sale to sale and isn’t there every day — but it’s exactly the kind of opportunity we keep an eye out for whenever a Business Class special to North America is released.

Once you’ve flown direct to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston or Vancouver, an Air New Zealand through-fare can carry you onward with partners such as United, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines and WestJet — to destinations right across the United States and Canada, and on to Mexico, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. From Boston to Nashville, Calgary to Halifax, or Cancún to San Juan, if there’s somewhere you need to be, there’s usually a way to achieve it on an Air New Zealand ticket.
Air New Zealand Business Premier to the UK and Europe — part of the way
London remains the single most popular destination for New Zealand travellers heading to the UK and Europe, and now it's only possible to fly "halfway" with Air New Zealand since its London service ceased. Air New Zealand partners with a number of airlines to that connecting point — so flying Business Premier on the sector from / to New Zealand, then connecting with the partner’s Business Class, is where the savings (and the wider UK and European network) come together:
Singapore Airlines, via Singapore. Through the Air New Zealand–Singapore Airlines joint venture, fly to Singapore and connect onto Singapore Airlines’ extensive network to the UK and Europe — now one of the most-used pathways for our clients.
Cathay Pacific, via Hong Kong. Fly Air New Zealand Business Premier to Hong Kong, then onward to a wide spread of European cities.
The European flag carriers, into their home cities. Connect with KLM to Amsterdam, Air France to Paris, Lufthansa to Frankfurt or Munich, or SWISS to Zurich — among others.
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, to London. Two routes into the destination that remains the most popular of all for New Zealand travellers.
Beyond these options on Air New Zealand tickets, are opportunities to fly Business Class to the UK and Europe with the likes of Turkish Airlines. The partnership includes Air New Zealand Business Class through routes via Asia to connect with the Turkish Airlines' extensive network into the UK and Europe.
There’s more than one way to reach the UK & Europe, and it’s worth knowing both. You can travel via Asia — Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai or Tokyo — or via North America, flying direct to Los Angeles or San Francisco and connecting onward with United and other partners. As a Star Alliance member, Air New Zealand widens that partner network further still. The best routing for you comes down to your dates, your preferred stopover and the fares live at the time.
It also means you’re not limited to the major hubs. On a single Air New Zealand through-fare, we can ticket you onward to more than 60 cities across the UK and Europe — from Edinburgh, Manchester and Dublin to Nice, Venice and Vienna, and on to smaller centres such as Cork, Bergen, Porto and Dubrovnik. If there’s a particular city you have in mind, there’s very often a way to reach it.
When the discounted Business Class fares are available with these partners, they incorporate a meaningful amount of flying time in Air New Zealand’s Business Premier. They also open up more comprehensive European networks — and with them the benefit of open-jaw flights that can save further time and money.

What about Air New Zealand status and Airpoints?
There is one trade-off worth knowing. When the ticket you buy is with the partner airline, or involves flying on a non-Air New Zealand aircraft as part of an Air New Zealand ticket, you generally won’t earn the full Business Class allocation of Airpoints Dollars and Status Points; these typically accrue at the partner-airline rate instead.
Air New Zealand has recently refreshed this programme, rebranding Airpoints as Koru — with Gold and Platinum tiers and a new pinnacle Black tier. We unpacked what’s changed, and who it suits, in Air New Zealand’s New Koru Programme.
In every other regard, once you’re onboard you’re looked after exactly as you would be on an Air New Zealand Business Premier ticket. For travellers chasing or holding status it’s a consideration to weigh against the saving — and a conversation we’re happy to have, dates and goals in hand.
