About this journey
Optional Extension
You have the option of extending your safari to an additional three pre nights at NamibRand Nature Reserve, staying at the delightful Wolwedans Dunes Camp/Lodge. The NamibRand Nature Reserve is a private reserve established to help protect and conserve the unique ecology and wildlife of the desert. Set on an escarpment, this lodge offers stunning desert vistas. Or you have the option to extend your safari for an additional one or two post nights at Okonjima Bush Camp in the Okonjima Nature Reserve. Enjoy a range of activities on offer at the lodge, with wildlife sightings often including leopard, brown hyena and occasionally pangolin.
Who this suits
Couples or a small party of friends who want Namibia's highlights with a private guide and vehicle, setting the pace themselves. The private version of the small-group tour.
Good to know
Rates are set for one, two or four guests, so the price per person depends on the size of your party. Game drives at Ongava are shared with other lodge guests; everything else is private. Extensions — three nights at Wolwedans before, or a night or two at Okonjima after — can be added; ask us.
The journey
Day by day
Day 1 — Windhoek
On arrival you will be met and transferred to Galton House for your first night in Windhoek. The Galton House has a relaxed but efficient style which creates a very welcoming atmosphere.
Day 2 — Windhoek › Sossusvlei
Today you depart Windhoek and drive through the scenic Khomas Hochland highlands before heading down the Great Escarpment into the Namib Desert. Stop for a picnic lunch at a scenic location along the way. Continue your journey to the Dead Valley Lodge where you will spend two nights at the only camp inside the world’s 4th largest National Park.
Day 3 — Sossusvlei, Namib Desert
This morning you will need to rise early for a magical excursion with your guide to explore the remarkable sights of the Namib Naukluft National Park. This area boasts some of the highest free-standing sand dunes in the world and your guide will give you an insight on the formation of the Namib Desert and its myriad of fascinating creatures and plants that have adapted to survive these harsh environs.
Enjoy a relaxed picnic brunch in the shade of a camel thorn tree. You then return to Dead Valley Lodge in the early afternoon in time for a late lunch, with the option to visit Sesriem Canyon afterwards if you haven’t already done so the day before. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.
Day 4 — Sossusvlei › Swakopmund
A fascinating drive today northwest through awesome and ever changing desert landscapes. Meet the coast at the port town of Walvis Bay and then continue north to Swakopmund where you can enjoy the pleasant seaside location and cooler coastal air for your next two nights. Enjoy dinner at a popular restaurant specializing in fresh seafood.
Day 5 — Swakopmund
After an early breakfast, you have two options to spend your day: you can go sea kayaking at Pelican Point or take a motorised boat. Here you should see Cape fur seals, bottlenose dolphins, pelicans, flamingos and if you are lucky whales and leatherback turtles. During the course of the day, the guide will stop and inform you about the environment and light refreshments will be served.
Day 6 — Swakopmund › Damaraland
Continuing on your safari, into the diverse region of Damaraland. Pass Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg and take time to view game and absorb the vastness of the scenery along the way.
Day 7 — Damaraland
During your time in Damaraland enjoy an exciting 4×4 excursion in search of the elusive desert adapted elephants if they are in the area. You also have the option to take a picnic lunch and stop to enjoy that in the shade of a large Ana tree by the riverbed, ideally while watching a herd of elephant browsing nearby.
Your guide will arrange to fit in a visit to Twyfelfontein and other nearby attractions at a suitable time. On return to camp there should be time to take a walk into the local area with your guide if desired, or simply relax and enjoy some well-deserved leisure time.
Day 8 — Damaraland › Etosha National Park
Today you set off on your journey to the Ongava Game Reserve, which is situated on the southern border of Etosha National Park. You arrive in time for an afternoon game drive on the Ongava Game Reserve in an open game viewer with Ongava ranger, on shared basis with other lodge guests.
Day 9 — Etosha National Park
Full day of exciting game viewing within Etosha National Park. There is then time to relax by the refreshing swimming pool before you head out again for an afternoon game drive into Etosha before exiting the park before sunset. The rest of the evening can be spent game viewing at the camp’s floodlit waterhole while enjoying dinner, and afterwards.
Day 10 — Etosha › Windhoek
Today you will drive south from Ongava via Outjo and Otjiwarongo to Windhoek for you final night stay.
Day 11 — Windhoek
