A rare wilderness region of outstanding beauty, Rwanda is home to a vast savannah teeming with iconic wildlife.

Akagera National Park, in the far east of Rwanda and overlooking beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga, comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa. Here, open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp and grassy low mountains are home to prolific plains game and to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, some very large crocodiles and a healthy population of lion as well as the rare sitatunga and black rhino, along with more than 520 bird species.

Akagera National Park Wilderness Magashi Camp Lake Rwanyakazinga

Wildlife journey. This itinerary can be tailor-made, with the number of days and activities varied to suit you, and additional travel arrangements before and after your stay.

About

About this journey

Wilderness Magashi is an award-winning, exclusive camp located in a private concession within Akagera National Park. With just 8 spacious en-suite canvas tented rooms, and a focus on privacy, luxury, and conservation, Magashi offers an exceptional and diverse safari experience.

The camp’s layout is designed to maximise the glorious views over Lake Rwanyakazinga, where guests may see elephants quietly wading into the lake, and graceful giraffe and other game feeding beyond, out in the open. The main areas consist of a chic lounge, dining area, bar and pool – every corner boasting glorious views, while the expansive viewing deck is the perfect stage for sundowners and storytelling at the convivial fire pit.

Guests enjoy thrilling game viewing by boat on elevated seating for unimpeded sightings. Game drives offer guests the opportunity to help conservation efforts by tracking and identifying the lions and leopards of the area through the use of identikits. At night, listen to the songs and stories of the land during a traditional Kugisha supper around a roaring fire with friends old and new.

Every Wilderness camp directly contributes funds to conservation through a dedicated conservation initiative, the Wilderness Trust. Wilderness also runs community partnerships in every region it operates — from community trusts in Botswana and Namibia to reforestation programmes in Rwanda.

Who this suits

Travellers who want Rwanda's savannah rather than its forests — three nights at Wilderness Magashi in Akagera National Park's private north-eastern concession, reached by road from Kigali, with day and night game drives in open vehicles of seven at most and boating on Lake Rwanyakazinga.

Good to know

All meals and house drinks are included; premium spirits, Champagne and gratuities are extra, as is the night before in Kigali — Day 1 leaves early for a five- to six-hour drive to the park. Transfers between Kigali and the park gate are private; from the gate to camp, and on safari, they are shared. Ask us about cross-season pricing or a Kigali city tour on Day 4.

The journey

Day by day

Day 1 — Kigali › Akagera National Park

Depart early morning from Kigali and transfer to Akagera National Park, a scenic 5-6 hour drive. Stay at the luxury Magashi Camp, situated in the only exclusive-use area in Akagera. Eight spacious and airy en-suite tents offer uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga, while the camp’s main area comprises a luxurious lounge, dining and bar area, pool, and expansive viewing deck with a convivial fire pit. The architecture and interiors pay homage to traditional Rwandan culture.

During your stay you will enjoy exploring this phenomenally diverse north-eastern corner of the park, and encountering the wildlife it is home to with expert guides. Warm hospitality, delicious cuisine and awe-inspiring starry night skies complete the picture.

Days 2 & 3 — Akagera National Park

Explore the park on thrilling day and night game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles; each vehicle accommodates a maximum of seven guests, allowing each individual an outside seat. Boating in eight-seater swamp cruisers is also offered and is an excellent way to view the water birds and many other aquatic animals seen around Lake Rwanyakazinga. Akagera is renowned as one of the best birding areas in the world with more than 500 species recorded here.

Day 4 — Akagera National Park › Kigali

This morning after breakfast depart and transfer back to Kigali.
