Hurtigruten

The spirit of Norway, since 1893.

Sailing the Norwegian coast for more than 130 years, Hurtigruten is the keeper of the original Coastal Express — “The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage”. Now a proudly independent Norwegian company, its working ships connect fjords, towns and people between Bergen and Kirkenes, while its elevated Signature voyages reach further still — to the North Cape and the Arctic wilderness of Svalbard.

Three things set the Hurtigruten experience apart.

01

The Original Coastal Express

The voyage that started it all. Since 1893, Hurtigruten’s coastal ships have sailed the 2,500-nautical-mile route between Bergen and Kirkenes, calling at 34 ports day and night. With full-board dining and year-round departures, an Original voyage immerses you in the genuine rhythm of everyday life along the Norwegian coast.

02

Signature Voyages

An elevated way to sail, aboard MS Trollfjord. Signature voyages — including the North Cape Line and the Svalbard Line — call at fewer ports but linger longer, with all-inclusive dining and drinks, hand-picked excursions, onboard lectures, and Norway’s Coastal Kitchen showcasing produce from the very ports you visit.

03

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Hurtigruten is the first and only travel brand to earn the “Made in Norway” trademark. Sustainability runs through everything it does — from hybrid-powered ships and a long-standing ban on non-essential single-use plastic to its support for environmental, cultural and social projects along the coast and beyond.

The Northern Lights Promise

See the aurora — or sail again with Hurtigruten, free

For travellers with their heart set on the swirling glow of the aurora borealis, Hurtigruten makes a promise no one else can match — backed by more than 130 years of sailing the Norwegian coast, directly beneath the Northern Lights.

Hurtigruten’s Promise

Sail 11 days or more in aurora season. If the Northern Lights don’t appear, Hurtigruten will take you on another Coastal Express voyage — free.

Why the Promise Holds

01

Beneath the Auroral Zone

Hurtigruten sails directly beneath the Auroral Zone — the band of sky with the most consistent and heightened Northern Lights activity on Earth. It’s why the odds are so firmly in your favour.

02

Floating observatories

The ships act as mobile observatories, moving between areas of heavy cloud and stretches of clear sky to find the best possible conditions to catch the aurora the very moment it appears.

03

In-cabin aurora alerts

Every cabin and suite has a Northern Lights alert. Whenever the crew spot the aurora — day or night — they’ll let you know, so you can step out and watch the Arctic sky come alive.

What you need to know

Sail an eligible voyage of 11 days or more during the auroral season (20 September – 31 March).

Available on The Coastal Express and The North Cape Line voyages along the Norwegian coast.

If the aurora isn’t officially sighted on board, Hurtigruten gives you a complimentary 6- or 7-day Coastal Express voyage (inside twin cabin, full board) to chase it again.

Valid on new bookings for voyages departing through 31 March 2028.

Chase the aurora with Hurtigruten

Tell us when you’d like to travel and we’ll help you choose an eligible aurora-season voyage — and arrange your connecting flights too.

Hurtigruten’s Northern Lights Promise is valid on new bookings of voyages of 11 days or more along the Norwegian coast aboard The Coastal Express and The North Cape Line, departing between 20 September and 31 March, through 31 March 2028. A Northern Lights occurrence is defined as a sighting from the ship, recorded by the ship’s deck officers and announced to passengers on board; the ship’s decision is final. If no occurrence is recorded, you’ll receive a complimentary Original Coastal Express Classic Voyage (6-day southbound or 7-day northbound) in an unspecified inside twin cabin on a full-board basis, departing between 20 September and 31 March of the following year. The complimentary voyage must be claimed and booked within 28 days of your return date. Cabin upgrades are available at additional cost; suite upgrades are not available with this offer. The offer may be withdrawn or amended at any time. This is a summary only — the full and binding terms and conditions are set by Hurtigruten and will be confirmed with Hurtigruten at the time of booking.
