As a seasoned ocean cruiser with voyages ranging from quick escapes to 28-day transpacific repositionings, I was eager to experience a river cruise for the first time since my Nile journey in 1999. AmaWaterways’ Holland and Belgium itinerary offered the perfect opportunity to discover how this more intimate style of cruising compares — and it exceeded every expectation.
Upon docking just after midday, a crew member promptly assisted with our luggage and escorted us to reception. While our stateroom was prepared (ready at 3pm), we relaxed in the lounge with a light lunch of sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee, and complimentary bar service — a gracious touch on disembarkation day.
Our stateroom was upgraded to a **double balcony** category, featuring both a full private balcony and a Juliet balcony. The space was thoughtfully designed and highly comfortable, though naturally more compact than ocean-cruise suites. Bathrooms were modern and well-appointed. Housekeeping was exceptional, with twice-daily service and same-day laundry return — a real convenience on a week-long voyage.
Dining on AmaWaterways is a highlight. Both lunch and dinner offered abundant choice: a chef’s special prepared at the station, an impressive salad bar, a dessert table, daily favourites, and rotating recommendations with thoughtfully paired wines. During lunch and dinner service, wine, beer, and spirits were complimentary for two hours in the dining room.
For lighter options, the lounge provided breakfast and lunch alternatives with scenic views. We also booked the Chef’s Table, an intimate multi-course experience at the stern with panoramic 180-degree vistas. While a minor allergy communication hiccup required on-the-spot adjustments (something I’m confident the team will streamline as the season progresses), the overall quality, presentation, and feedback from fellow guests were outstanding.
Each port featured at least three excursion options, including regular and gentle-paced walking tours — the latter proved invaluable after I aggravated my knee. The slower tempo allowed us to appreciate every landmark comfortably. Cycling tours were also available at nearly every stop for more active guests.
Entertainment was delightfully varied. Two standout guest performances included a classical trio delivering an eclectic programme (Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to the Pink Panther theme and Danny Boy) that earned a standing ovation, and a rock-and-roll trio in Rotterdam that had the lounge dancing. The crew’s Dutch-themed night and resident DJ added further charm.
Unlike ocean liners, there is no casino — just one sociable bar with ample seating, a cosy café area by the coffee station, and a quiet library corner. The smaller ship fostered genuine connections with both fellow travellers and crew, who grew warmer and more attentive as the week progressed.
One of the greatest pleasures was the relaxed pace. With shorter distances between ports, the ship docks in a new destination daily. There are no traditional “sea days,” yet the cruising segments were wonderfully serene — gliding past countryside often just metres from the deck. Watching historic towns and pastoral landscapes drift by created a sense of calm immersion impossible on larger vessels.
This was a superb introduction to European river cruising. The intimate scale delivers a more personalised, culturally rich experience while maintaining the high standards of service and cuisine expected in luxury travel.
Would I take another river cruise? Absolutely.
Would I sail with AmaWaterways again? Yes — I’m already researching my next itinerary.
